Exact conversion factors

Conversions use internationally agreed definitions: an inch is exactly 2.54 cm, a pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg, and a US gallon is exactly 3.785411784 litres. Temperatures are converted with formulas rather than a simple multiplier, because the scales start at different points.

US vs. UK measures, and KB vs. KiB

  • US and UK (imperial) gallons are different sizes: a UK gallon is about 20% larger. Cups, pints and fluid ounces here are US measures.
  • A kilobyte (KB) here is 1,000 bytes. A kibibyte (KiB) is 1,024 bytes. Storage makers use KB/MB/GB; some operating systems show KiB/MiB/GiB but label them KB/MB/GB.

How precise are the results?

Why can’t I convert −300 °C?

It’s below absolute zero (−273.15 °C), the lowest temperature that can exist.
