How fraction arithmetic works
- Add or subtract
- Use a common denominator:
a/b + c/d = (ad + bc) / bd. - Multiply
- Multiply the tops and the bottoms:
a/b × c/d = ac / bd. - Divide
- Flip the second fraction and multiply:
a/b ÷ c/d = ad / bc.
Every result is reduced by dividing the top and bottom by their greatest common divisor.
