How to use the url slug generator

  1. Type or paste a title. Use one line per title for several slugs.
  2. Choose a separator and a maximum length.
  3. Optionally remove small words like “the” and “for”.
  4. Copy the slug.

What makes a good slug

  • Short and descriptive: aim for three to five meaningful words.
  • Lowercase, with hyphens between words. Search engines treat hyphens as word separators.
  • No dates or numbers that will go out of date, unless they matter.
  • Once a page is published, keep its slug. If you must change it, set up a redirect.

What the generator changes

Accents are removed (é → e), “&” becomes “and”, apostrophes are dropped so “don’t” becomes “dont”, and every other symbol becomes a separator. Long slugs are trimmed back to the last whole word.

Hyphens or underscores?

Hyphens are the usual choice for URLs, and Google recommends them. Underscores are fine for file names and IDs.

Does it support non-Latin scripts?

Accented Latin letters are converted. Other scripts, such as Cyrillic or Chinese, are removed, so transliterate them first if you need them.

Will removing small words hurt SEO?

No. Short slugs are easier to read and share. Keep a small word if the slug reads oddly without it.
