Area formulas

  • Rectangle: length × width
  • Triangle: base × height ÷ 2
  • Circle: π × radius²
  • Trapezoid: (top + bottom) ÷ 2 × height
  • Parallelogram: base × height
  • Ellipse: π × semi-major × semi-minor axis

Measuring a room

For an L-shaped room, split it into rectangles, work out each one and add them together. Add 5–10% extra when buying flooring or tiles to allow for cuts.

Examples

Rectangle, 12 × 8 metres

96 m² · 1,033.34 ft²

Circle, radius 3 metres

28.2743 m²
