How to use the discount calculator

  1. Enter the original price.
  2. Enter the discount percentage.
  3. Add an extra discount if the deal stacks (for example, “an extra 10% off sale items”).
  4. Add sales tax to see the final amount at the checkout.

Stacked discounts don’t add up

“25% off, then an extra 10% off” is not 35% off. The second discount applies to the already-reduced price: 25% off $80 is $60, and 10% off $60 is $54. That’s 32.5% off in total. The calculator shows the true combined saving.

The formula

sale price = price × (1 − discount ÷ 100) × (1 − extra ÷ 100). Tax, if you add it, is then charged on the sale price.

Examples

$80 jacket, 25% off

You pay $60.00 and save $20.00

$80, 25% off + extra 10%, 8% tax

You pay $58.32 · total saving 32.5%

Questions

Is tax charged before or after the discount?

In most places, sales tax is charged on the discounted price, so that’s what the calculator does.

Can I work out the original price from a sale price?

Divide the sale price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). For example, $60 after 25% off came from $60 ÷ 0.75 = $80.

What if the discount is a fixed amount, like $15 off?

Subtract it from the price directly, or use the percentage calculator to see what percentage that amount is.
