What BMI means — and what it doesn’t
BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. For adults, the World Health Organization uses these ranges: under 18.5 is underweight, 18.5–24.9 is a healthy weight, 25–29.9 is overweight, and 30 or more is obesity.
BMI is a quick screening number for populations, not a diagnosis for individuals. It doesn’t distinguish muscle from fat, and it’s less accurate for athletes, older adults, pregnant people and some ethnic groups. It isn’t used the same way for children and teens. If you have concerns about your weight, talk to a health professional.
