How to use the quadratic equation solver
- Write your equation in the form ax² + bx + c = 0.
- Enter a, b and c, including minus signs.
- Read the solutions.
The quadratic formula
x = (−b ± √(b² − 4ac)) ÷ 2a. The part under the root, the discriminant, tells you what to expect: positive means two real roots, zero means one, negative means two complex roots.
Examples
x = 5 or x = −2
x = −1 ± 2i
