How to use the roi calculator

  1. Enter the amount invested.
  2. Enter the amount returned, including the original investment.
  3. Optionally add how many years it took.

The ROI formula

ROI = (returned − invested) ÷ invested × 100. A 1,000 investment that becomes 1,500 has an ROI of 50%.

Why annualize?

A 50% return over one year is far better than 50% over ten. The annualized return spreads the gain across the years as if it compounded evenly, so investments of different lengths can be compared fairly.

Examples

Questions

Should I include fees?

Yes. Add fees to the amount invested, or take them off the amount returned, for a true figure.

Can ROI be negative?

Yes. If you got back less than you put in, the ROI is negative.

Is this investment advice?

No. It only does the arithmetic on numbers you enter.
